Pet Accessories Under $50: Useful Dog and Cat Picks, One per Job

Short answer

The most useful pet accessories under fifty dollars handle a job that comes up every week. From our catalog, that means a fold-out-bowl water bottle, a reflective collar, a car seat belt tether, a de-shedding tool, a lick pad and slow feeder, and a cat harness. For a gift, the bottle and lick pad need no measurement.

How we chose these six picks

Each item had to pass the same four checks:

  • Under fifty dollars in every option. We checked the highest-priced size or color of each item, not only the cheapest. Prices can change, so the live price on each card below is the one that counts.
  • A job that repeats. Walks, car rides, brushing and meals happen every week, so an accessory tied to one of them gets used.
  • One pick per job. Instead of three similar options, each job gets the one item in our catalog that fits it best.
  • Limited to what we stock. These picks come only from Nilosi’s own catalog. We haven’t compared them with everything on the market, and where an item has a catch, we name it.

Two kinds of gifts are left out on purpose. Toys are better chosen by how a dog plays or how a cat hunts, and anything that has to fit a particular car seat or room depends on details a gift-giver rarely knows. If you’re shopping for a particular household rather than to a price limit, our guides to practical gifts for dog owners, organized by chore, and practical gifts for cat owners go deeper.

For the walk: water on the go and a reflective collar

Water and a bowl in one hand

Water on a walk usually means a bottle, a separate bowl and a leash, all competing for two hands. The Flipo Fold-A-Bowl Dog Water Bottle builds the bowl into the cover: the food-grade TPU cover folds out, you press the button to pour, and the dog drinks from the cover. The bottle holds 26 ounces, a wrist strap lets you hold it and the leash at once, and the push-button closure is made not to leak in a bag.

Suits: long walks, hikes and warm-weather outings, and dog walkers or sitters who head out with several dogs a day. There’s no size to choose, only a color. The catch: it’s hand wash only, so rinse the bowl at home rather than putting it in the dishwasher.

A collar that catches headlights

The Lupine Pet Reflective Dog Collar is a flat everyday collar with reflective threads woven through the pattern instead of printed on top. A D-ring carries the leash and ID tags, and the adjustable size ranges run from tiny dogs to XXL, in several widths and six designs. It’s made in the USA.

Suits: any dog that wears a collar for its tags, especially one walked at dawn or dusk. It’s a sized gift: measure around the neck where the collar sits, choose the range that includes that number, and check that two fingers slide underneath once it’s fastened. The catch: reflective thread shines only when light hits it, such as a car’s headlights, so it helps drivers see the dog but doesn’t light your way; add a light for walks after dark. For a dog that pulls hard, clip the leash to a harness and let the collar carry the tags.

  • Flipo

Fold-A-Bowl Dog Water Bottle with Fold-Out Bowl, Choose color

    $28.95

Why it fits: Puts water and a bowl in one hand on long walks and needs no size, only a color, so it is the easiest pick here to give to any dog owner or dog walker.

  • Lupine Pet

Reflective Dog Collar, Choose size & design

    Price range: $22.95 through $28.95

Why it fits: An everyday collar for ID tags with reflective threads woven in for dawn and dusk walks; a sized gift, so get the neck measurement first.

For the car: a seat belt tether

The Adjustable Dog Car Seat Belt Tether comes in a pack of two. Each is a nylon strap with a buckle tab at one end, which pushes into the car’s seat-belt buckle, and a metal carabiner at the other, which clips to the dog’s harness. Adjust the length so the dog can sit, stand and lie down on the back seat but can’t reach the front seat or wander across the back. The second tether covers a second dog or a second car.

Suits: dogs that would otherwise ride loose on the back seat and already wear a well-fitting harness. It doesn’t have to fit the seat itself, but the tab fits most vehicle buckles rather than every one, so check that it clicks in and holds when you tug. The catch: a harness isn’t included. If the dog doesn’t have one with a ring on the back, the gift isn’t complete.

Safety note

Clip the tether to the back ring of a harness, never to a collar, where a sudden stop would pull on the neck. A tether keeps a dog in one place and away from the driver. It is not crash protection, so don’t choose it on that basis.

For shedding: a de-shedding tool for double coats

A double coat has a soft, dense undercoat beneath longer guard hairs, and that undercoat is what ends up on rugs and car seats. The JESPET De-Shedding Tool has a stainless-steel edge that reaches through the topcoat to lift out undercoat that has already come loose, before it drifts onto the furniture. It has an ergonomic handle, comes in Small and Large, and is made for dogs and cats with a double coat.

Suits: double-coated dogs such as Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and Huskies, and cats with a thick undercoat. Skip it for smooth single coats and for long, silky or curly coats, which need a brush rather than an edge. Gentle use matters more than the tool itself: our guide to using a de-shedding tool without overdoing it covers choosing the size, pressure, how often to use it, the areas to avoid and the signs of overuse.

A brush can’t fix a skin problem. Bald patches, red or flaky skin, sores, or a sudden change in shedding outside the usual seasons are worth a call to your veterinarian.

  • Adjustable Dog Car Seat Belt Tether, View product

    $23.95

Why it fits: Two adjustable tethers keep a back-seat rider in one spot, one per dog or per car; clip to a harness, never a collar, and treat it as a restraint, not crash protection.

  • JESPET

De-Shedding Tool for Dogs & Cats, Choose size

    Price range: $27.95 through $29.95

Why it fits: Lifts loose undercoat on double-coated dogs and cats, in Small or Large, so it is the one pick here that suits both species, as long as the coat is double.

For mealtimes: a lick pad and slow feeder in one

The Spunky Pup 3-in-1 is a single piece of food-grade silicone with two sides worth buying it for. The lick pad holds a thin spread of wet food, yogurt or peanut butter for a slow, focused session; the slow-feeder side spreads a meal out so a fast eater has to work through it. Afterward it goes in the dishwasher. The name also lists an elevated-bowl mode, but we chose it for the lick pad and the slow feeder.

Suits: dogs that finish a bowl in seconds, and dogs that do better with something to lick while you brush them, trim their nails or towel off muddy legs. There’s no size to choose. The catch: silicone is for licking, not chewing. Pick it up once the food is gone, and replace it if it gets torn or chewed.

Safety note

If you use peanut butter, read the label first: the FDA warns that xylitol, a sweetener found in some peanut and nut butters, is dangerous for dogs. Count whatever goes on the pad as part of the day’s food, and ask your veterinarian before changing how a dog on a special diet is fed.

For cats: a harness for supervised outings

The Lupine Pet Reflective H-Style Cat Harness is two adjustable loops, one at the base of the neck and one around the chest, joined along the back. It’s made for cats, so it doesn’t restrict the shoulders, and it fastens with quick-release buckles, has a reflective weave and comes in two girth ranges, 9–14 inches and 12–20 inches, in six designs. Like the dog collar, it’s made in the USA by Lupine Pet.

Suits: a confident, curious indoor cat that watches birds from the window and shrugs off surprises, with an owner who will put in a few weeks of short practice sessions. The harness is the easy part of this gift; the training is the rest of it. Start indoors, a few minutes at a time, and follow our week-by-week plan for harness training a cat.

Safety note

Take the harness off after every session, and never leave a cat in a harness unattended or tied up, indoors or out. Before any time outside, ask your veterinarian about vaccinations and parasite prevention.

If the cat hides from visitors or startles at household noises, a harness is likely to stress it more than it helps. Choose by habit instead: our guide to what to get your cat for Christmas matches gifts to hunters, scratchers and nappers, and works any time of year. Only two picks need a tape measure. For the collar, compare the neck measurement with the ranges on the product page; the size on the dog’s current collar is a clue, but the tape-measure number is what counts. For the cat harness, measure the chest just behind the front legs. A cat at 12 to 14 inches fits both ranges, and the cat section of our guide to measuring for a harness, collar or coat explains which to choose. For the de-shedding tool, the check is the coat: soft, fluffy clumps every spring and fall point to a double coat, while a smooth, silky or curly coat calls for a different gift.

Pet accessory gift FAQ

Which of these work for both dogs and cats?

Only the de-shedding tool, and only on a double coat. The harness is made for cats, and the other four are dog gear. For a cat-only household, pair the de-shedding tool or the harness with an idea from the cat guides above.

Are any of these good for a new puppy?

The water bottle suits a puppy from the first walks, and the tether does once the puppy is comfortable in a harness. The lick pad works for supervised sessions; pick it up before a teething puppy starts chewing it. Puppies grow fast, so if you give the collar, recheck the fit every week or two, loosen it as needed and move up a size range once it no longer adjusts to fit. Hold off on the de-shedding tool until the adult coat comes in; a soft brush is enough for a puppy coat.
