Gifts for Small Dogs: Beds, Coats, Car Seats and More That Fit
Short answer
A good gift for a small dog is one made for its size: a rimmed bed to curl up in, a coat cut in XXS to Medium, a booster seat or backpack rated for its weight, a padded harness in XS or Small, or a toy it can carry. Get its weight, chest girth and back length first.

What makes a gift fit a small dog
We held each gift to three tests, because a small dog’s needs start with size:
- A stated size or limit. A weight limit, a size range or measurements you can compare with the dog before you buy, not just a small dog in the product photo.
- A habit it serves. Curling up to sleep, feeling the cold on winter walks, riding in the car, running out of steam on outings, the daily walk or carrying toys around the house.
- Our own catalog. The picks come only from Nilosi’s range. We haven’t compared them with every small-dog product on the market, and each section names the pick’s catch and the dog it doesn’t suit.
That makes small a matter of measurements rather than breed: a dog inside the stated limits, which top out at 24 pounds for the booster seat and 25 for the backpack. Shopping for the person rather than the dog? Our guide to practical gifts for dog owners is organized by daily chore, and for an older little dog, gifts for senior dogs and cats leans toward warmth and easier outings.
For the napper: a cuddler bed with a rim
If the dog you’re buying for sleeps curled into a ball, or wedges itself into the corner of the sofa, it likes something to lean against. A round bed with a raised rim gives it that edge all the way around.
The Armarkat Ultra-Plush Cuddler Bed is made for cats and small dogs, in two sizes: Small, at 22 × 22 × 8 in, and a larger Medium. The raised bolster gives a chin somewhere to rest, the thick plush holds warmth, and a water-resistant, skid-free base keeps the bed where you put it.
Size check: a bed’s listed size usually includes the rim, so the space the dog lies in is smaller than 22 inches across. Picture the dog curled up asleep; if it would nearly fill the Small’s floor, or it sometimes sleeps stretched out, choose the Medium. Our guide to measuring a dog for a bed shows how to measure a curler and judge the space inside a rim. The catch: plush that holds warmth suits a dog that seeks out blankets and sunny patches, less so one that sprawls on the cool kitchen floor in summer. The bed is machine washable on a gentle cycle, though hand washing keeps the plush at its best.
For cold walks: a small-dog coat
Little dogs feel the cold sooner than big ones. The AKC’s guide to dog winter coats notes that small breeds can’t hold on to body heat as well in cold weather, and that low-slung dogs struggle too, because their bellies get wet in snow and ice.
The DCNY Ranch Dog Coat is made only in small-dog sizes, XXS, XS, Small and Medium, and in three finishes: Home by Sunset, Smoked Charcoal and Sherpa Lined Denim. Wide hook-and-loop closures at the chest and belly make it quicker to put on a dog that won’t stand still for long. It’s made in the USA, machine washes on a gentle cycle and dries flat.
Size check: a coat needs three numbers: the back, from where the neck meets the shoulders to where the tail starts; the chest around its widest point; and the neck at its base. Our guide on measuring a dog for a harness, collar or coat shows where the tape goes. Custom sizes aren’t offered, so a dog outside XXS to Medium needs a different gift. Find out, too, how the dog is walked: XXS and XS have a built-in leash clip, and Small and Medium have an opening for a harness worn underneath. The catch: materials and lining vary by finish, and Sherpa Lined Denim is the one the listing describes as lined, so choose it if warmth matters most. Nothing in the listing calls the coat waterproof; treat it as a cold-weather layer, not a raincoat. If the dog has never worn a coat, try it on indoors for a minute or two, with treats, before the first cold walk.

For the car: a booster seat
From the back seat, a small dog sees mostly upholstery. A booster raises the dog to window height and gives it one cushioned spot to stay in, which suits a dog that likes to watch the world go by.
The GOOPAWS Dog Booster Car Seat holds pets up to 24 lb (11 kg) and measures 16 × 13 × 9 in. Two adjustable straps fasten it to the seat back and headrest, a built-in tether clips to the dog’s harness, and the cushion comes out for washing. A zippered front pocket holds treats and a spare leash, and there are several colors and patterns to choose from.
Size check: weight first, then shape. A long-backed dog close to 24 lb may be cramped on a 16-by-13-inch seat, so picture the dog curled up in that space. Check that the car seat you’ll use has a headrest for the straps. The catch: a harness isn’t included, and the tether must never go on a collar. The harness set below fills that gap, which makes the two a natural pair. If you’re not sure the dog would ride better on a booster than in a carrier, see booster seat vs carrier for a small dog.
Safety note
A booster seat keeps a small dog in one place and out of the driver’s way; it is not crash protection. Set it up in the back seat, and clip the tether to a harness, never to a collar, where a sudden stop would pull on the neck.
For outings: a backpack carrier
Little legs take several steps for each of yours. A backpack carrier lets a small dog walk part of the way and ride the rest, and keeps it off the ground in crowds and anywhere you’d otherwise carry it in your arms.
Rated for pets up to 25 lb, the GOOPAWS Cat & Small-Dog Carrier Backpack measures 12.5 × 10.5 × 16.5 in. Large top and side openings let air in and let you check on the dog, a soft fleece pad lines the floor, and there’s a safety strap inside. It also comes with a poop bag dispenser and a first bag.
Size check: the weight limit isn’t the only one. A dog can come in under 25 lb and still be cramped in a bag that measures 12.5 × 10.5 × 16.5 in, so compare those numbers with the dog sitting and curled up. If you use the inside strap, clip it to a harness rather than a collar. The catch: riding on someone’s back is new to most dogs. Leave the backpack open on the floor with a treat inside for a few days before anyone wears it, and keep the first trips short. In warm weather, check on the dog often through the openings, and leave the backpack at home on hot days.
Flying with the dog in the cabin? An under-seat carrier may be the better gift. The Armarkat Soft-Sided Pet Carrier is designed for under-seat travel, with three zip openings and an expandable canopy, but each airline sets its own carrier size limits and pet rules, so check them before booking.

For walks: a harness and leash set in XS or Small
A harness puts leash pressure on the chest instead of the neck. VCA lists Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, Yorkshire Terriers and toy Poodles among the small breeds that tracheal collapse often affects, and advises a harness rather than a collar for dogs with the condition. If a little dog coughs or honks when the leash tightens, that’s worth raising with a veterinarian.
The Mr. Peanut’s PetTrek Padded Reflective Dog Harness & Leash Set comes with a matching leash, so it’s ready for a walk straight out of the box. The harness is oxford nylon with cushioned padding where it rests against the dog, both pieces have reflective stitching for walks after sunset, and quick-release buckles and adjustable straps set the fit. It comes in four colors and four sizes, XS to Large.
Size check: measure the chest at its widest point, just behind the front legs, and compare it with the size chart in the product images, not with the label on the dog’s current harness, since one brand’s XS can be another’s Small. The catch: it’s a padded everyday harness, not one sold to stop pulling. Part of its value as a gift is how it works with the others here: the booster’s tether clips to it, and the coat’s Small and Medium sizes have an opening for it.
A toy sized for a small mouth
A toy built for a Labrador can be more than a six-pound dog can pick up, and one that’s too small brings its own risk: the Humane World for Animals guide to safe dog toys warns that toys that are too small can be swallowed or get lodged in the throat.
The Realistic Plush Fox Dog Toy is about 10 inches from head to rear, plus a 6-inch tail: a body a small dog can carry around the house and a tail for a gentle game of tug, with a squeaker inside the body. It needs no measurement, which makes it the easiest gift here when you can’t find out the dog’s size.
The catch: plush and squeakers aren’t for shredders. The fox is best for gentle to moderate chewers; supervise play, and take it away once a seam opens or the squeaker works loose. A dog that makes short work of plush may do better with the stuffing-free Fire Hose Crocodile Tough Dog Toy, though at 26 inches long it’s a lot of toy for a very small dog. | Booster seat | Weight, and a headrest | Up to 24 lb; 16 × 13 × 9 in |

Tip
Can’t measure without spoiling the surprise? Weight is the easiest number to get, since the owner may know it from the last vet visit, and it’s the first check for the booster and the backpack. A photo of the dog asleep helps with the bed. The coat and the harness need a tape measure.
For a puppy that’s still growing, the toy is the safest choice, since it needs no size; a coat, harness or bed chosen now may be outgrown within months. A size you picked that turns out not to fit is a change-of-mind return, so read our returns policy before ordering a sized gift, and check our shipping details for delivery times.
